Here comes the Google’s turn to offer bounty for hackers finding bugs in Chrome. As per the latest post “Encouraging More Chromium Security Research” on its official blog of Chrome, Google has decided to follow the practice of Microsoft and other organizations to reward the security researchers.

For every Security vulnerability found in Chrome, Google will be offering cash reward of $500 and if that bug turns out to be critical then it can go upto $1337 (magic number ). Even more, Google is willing to offer permanent position for security researcher in its Mountain View office at CA.

This is wise step from Google to get the attention of security researchers and make them work for its products.

However I wonder when third party organizations such as iDefense, Tipping Point offering bigger bounties for hackers why some one will settle for mere $500 …!

Open Office Easter Egg: Play Space Invaders in Calc

Finding an Easter egg in movies is usually a cool thing, but finding them in software is even cooler. Today we will look at the hidden game in the Open Office Spreadsheet program Calc.

Open up a new Calc Spreadsheet and enter =GAME("StarWars") into any of the cells and hit enter. Make sure and type in the capital letters as shown to get it to work. The easiest would be to copy the text above and paste it into a cell.

This opens up the Star-Wars Galaxy game which is a Space Invaders clone.

The instructions are in German but you don't need to know a single word to be able to start playing. Just use the arrow keys to move and the Spacebar to shoot.

This is not the greatest Space Invaders clone but still fun knowing you can take a break from data entry and get your retro gaming fix.

How To Hide Kernel Updates in Ubuntu

Ubuntu’s Update Manager is a great utility that keeps all of your software up-to-date. If you’re using the default sources, updates have been tested and should work with no problems.

However, one item that you may not want to upgrade is the Linux kernel that powers your computer. Maybe you’ve customized your kernel, are annoyed with constantly cleaning up your Grub boot menu, or have had issues with video and audio drivers not working after kernel updates.

The following steps will show you how to hide kernel upgrades in Ubuntu while still allowing you to use Update Manager to get other software updates.

APT (Advanced Packaging Tool) is the system that Ubuntu uses to manage all of the software installed on a system. It allows you to “pin” a package to a certain version, so that it won’t be updated when you the Update Manager runs.

To pin your kernel packages, first you must determine what version your kernel is. One way to do this is to open the Synaptic Package Manager in System > Administration.

Type in “linux-generic” in the Quick search text field and hit enter.

Make a note of the number listed in the “Installed Version” column. We’ll use it in the next step.

Next, we need to edit the file /etc/apt/preferences. Open it by pressing Alt+F2 to bring up the Run Application window and entering in:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/preferences

This will open up a gedit window. Most likely the window will be blank, unless you’ve played around with APT before.

In the window, type in the following, replacing the version number with the version number you found in the Synaptic Package Manager.

Package: linux-generic linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic linux-restricted-modules-generic
Pin: version <insert version here>
Pin-Priority: 1001

Save the file and close gedit. If you open the Update Manager, you should see that the Linux kernel updates are now hidden!

Remove Old Drivers After Upgrading to New Hardware

If you are experiencing weird issues after upgrading your hardware, or you’ve just upgraded to the latest hardware device and aren’t seeing the performance you’d like, you might want to remove the old drivers which are still installed for the old hardware, even though you can’t normally see them in device manager.

What you have to do is set a less-known flag to allow you to see non-present devices, and then launch device manager. You’ll then see the old devices in the list, and can uninstall the drivers for them.

In Windows Vista, the first thing you’ll need to do is open a command prompt in administrator mode. Type cmd into the start menu search box, and then use Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open in administrator mode. (You can also right-click on the command prompt and choose Run as Administrator)

Now paste in the following line:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1

Then type in devmgmt.msc to start up Device Manager from the administrator command prompt:

Once you are in Device Manager, go to the View menu and choose Show Hidden Devices, which will show all the device drivers including things that aren’t currently installed in your computer.

Notice how I have 6 mice in the list, even though I only have two installed (and my drawing tablet). The other 3 mice are old mice that I’ve used until they died…. the Geek tends to wear through input devices very quickly since he never leaves the computer…

You can right-click on the driver and then choose Uninstall from the menu to remove the drivers for that old hardware.

I’ve found that this can resolve a lot of weird issues, and even increase performance on some machines where you’ve upgraded a ton of times. This isn’t necessarily going to increase performance, but it’s nice to have a tidy computer nonetheless.

This tip also works the same in Windows XP.

Removing unused device drivers from Windows XP machines

Did you know that unless you uninstall a device driver on a Windows XP machine that it still may be sucking up valuable system resources? Here are step-by-step instructions on how you can view and remove these unnecessary devices.

When you install a device driver on a Windows XP machine, the operating system loads that driver each time the computer boots regardless of whether the device is present—unless you specifically uninstall the driver. This means that drivers from devices that you have long since removed from your system may be wasting valuable system resources.

Follow these steps to view and remove these unnecessary device drivers:

Press [Windows]+[Break] to bring up the System Properties dialog box.
Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
Click the New button below the System Variables panel.
In the New System Variable dialog box, type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in the Variable Name text box and 1 in the Variable Value text box.
Click OK to return to the System Properties dialog box and then click OK again.
Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
In Device Manager, go to View | Show Hidden Devices.
Expand the various branches in the device tree and look for the washed out icons, which indicate unused device drivers.
To remove an unused device driver, right-click the icon and select Uninstall.

Clean Computer System Original Win

This will show you how to clean up your Microsoft Windows PC. With these steps, you'll "clean up" your system and help it operate better.

Step 1

Do a Windows Update. This will be on your Start menu. If it isn't, then click on "All Programs", then "Accessories", then "System Tools". This will take you to the proper page. Alternatively, try windowsupdate.microsoft.com (not necessary with Vista). It is very important that you get all available security updates. Other updates may seem less critical, but are still recommended.

Step 2

Set Windows to update automatically. Open System: click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. Then click the Automatic Updates tab.

Step 3

–or–If you are running Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Automatic Updates. Under Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them, select the day and time you want Windows to install updates.

Step 4

#Get rid of cookies. These are the little crumbs that are left behind on your computer after you visit a website. This step may wipe out passwords for sites you visit. Be sure you know your password to these sites as you may be asked to enter it the next time you visit a site. Click on Start>Control Panel>Internet Options. The second row down will say Delete Cookies, click on that. Click on Delete Temporary file; when the little box comes up that says "delete offline," you don't have to click on that. Click on Delete temporary Files.
Alternatively, download CCleaner and CleanUp! and run them both after installation. CCleaner does a very good job for a free program. Be sure to scan the registry by clicking on Registry and then scanning. This will take care of all of your wasted space (e.g cookies, internet cache files).

Step 5

Complete Disk Cleanup. After clicking on "Start", move your cursor on "All Programs", then up to "Accessories", then "System Tools". Click on "Disk Cleanup" from the list that appears. Click the "More Options" tab at the top of the page, and select all three of the following: "Windows Components," "Installed Programs," and "System Restore". Clean up all three by clicking on their respective tabs. You may want to delete all but your most recent system restore point as you probably don't need the others.

Step 6

Defragment your computer. Defragmenting your computer moves all your files to where they are supposed to be. You may want to download an independent defragmenter (e.g. Defraggler by Piriform). It is small, concise, and more powerful, than the one distributed with Windows.

Step 7

Remove adware, malware, and spyware. Use a search engine to find "Lavasoft AdAware 2008". This will take you to a site to download the software. Download and install this program. You can also use "Spybot Search & Destroy." SpywareBlaster is a good preventative measure to use as well. All have easy-to-follow instructions. SUPERAnti-Spyware is yet another option. For malware, MBAM is yet another option.

Step 8

Install anti-virus software. There are free products available for personal use, such as AVG, Bitdefender and avast! Anti-Virus. You might also like to purchase such a product; the anti-virus market is fairly competitive, leading to many reasonably-priced products such as Norton Antivirus, McAfee VirusScan, etc.

Step 9

Go to My Computer. Now go to tools at the top. Folder Options... View, then check the box "Show Hidden Files and Folders" then go to Local Disk, Documents & Settings, Your Account, and delete everything in: My Recent Documents, Local Settings History (Do not delete everything in local settings, just delete everything in the history folder of local settings) (and while in Local Settings) Delete everything in temporary internet files.

Remove unwanted programs by going to start, control panel, add/remove programs, then remove unwanted programs.
When your computer is running in ship-shape, then go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, then system restore. Create a restore point, and when your computer is running poorly, restore it to the day.
If you haven't cleaned up your PC for a long time, you may need to clean your PC Registry with a System cleaner and Registry repair software

Tips

If using CCleaner, head over to Piriform's website (they make the program) and look for the "Other builds" link hanging around the Downloads link. Get the "Slim" version as the regular download includes adware you have to say no to, and it's smaller. Or get the portable version and unzip it to a USB flash drive to take it on the go. (Further tip: If English is your native language, don't unpack the LANG folder - it's just languages other than English.)
If you are new to computers, try to relax. You are likely to get a little stressed when you are not sure what is going on and wondering if your data is still okay. Try to find a computer-savvy friend to help you.
If you use Norton Antivirus, then set it to scan your computer as often as possible. (daily is best) To do this, click "scan for viruses" then click the button that has a clock on next to "scan my computer". This will take you to the scheduling window. It is best to schedule this when you are not using the computer, like when you're asleep, as it can take quite a few hours to finish, especially if you have a larger computer. This will cause it to detect many viruses, but also delete a lot a of spyware and adware, too.

Warnings

Be very careful of websites with pornography or free games. They are usually full of spyware that is difficult to get rid of. With some setups (e.g. Firefox with the proper extensions, easily found on any reputable website or forum (e.g. http://forum.piriform.com) and the McAffee SiteAdvisor add-on) you'll be more secure, but always be wary.
Some programs come with spyware or adware. CCleaner and DAEMON Tools are very good programs to have, but during installation, you have to be careful and opt out of installing the adware that pays their bills. Chances are, they get paid just for offering the adware to you, but even if not, don't think you have to compromise your system's performance or security to pay their bills. If any program offers you a marketing option (might be disguised as search or something) always say no.
Not all cookies are bad. Basically cookies hold website settings. Most of the time you don't need the sites tracking you, but if you use a forum, the cookie(s) will save your login information so you don't have to put it in every time. Weather sites and other sites you enter your ZIP code for local data use cookies to retain this setting.
Deleting the wrong files may ruin your computer. Make sure when you are looking for old files that you don't want anymore, that these files you absolutely don't need, and have nothing to do with the way the system runs itself.

Remote Shutdown On Lan

Do you need to shutdown a server or other remote computer? Need to do this from the convenience of your own PC? Here's how to shutdown a remote Windows computer from your own desktop.

Step 1

Open the command prompt. This may be done by clicking on the "Start" button, and selecting "Run".

Step 2

Type in cmd and press Enter.

Step 3

Type in shutdown -m \\computername, replacing "computername" with the name of the computer you wish to shutdown or the computers ip address.

Step 4

Experiment with the shutdown command's switches.

-r will force a restart, disabling any services or user interaction from interrupting it.
-c "comment" will force a comment to appear on the system being shutdown.
-t xx will force a timeout for "xx" seconds. For example, -t 60 would perform a shutdown after a 60 second timeout.
-a will abort the shutdown
A full command example: shutdown -m \\myserver -r -c "This system will shutdown in 60 seconds" -t 60

Step 5

Another method is to

type shutdown -i in the run window.
Click the "Add" box and type the name of the computer you want to shutdown or it's IP address. You can select what you want the computer to do.
In this mode, it is NECESSARY to add a comment. Finally press "OK".

Tips

For a complete list of the switches (options) for the "shutdown" command, type in shutdown ? inside of a command prompt window.
The target computer and your PC need to be in the same Domain or Workgroup for this to function correctly.
This will only work on Microsoft Windows based systems. Linux and Mac will require different terminal commands.
You may also run this shutdown command directly from the "Run" dialog. Opening a command prompt is merely a convenience in case you happen to type in the wrong system name or need to search for the name of the system to shutdown.

Warnings

Perform this only on your own network or where you are authorized to do this.
IT departments typically block access to using this command on a remote computer. Even if they do not hinder your ability to do this, performing this may be grounds for disciplinary action, a write-up at work, or worse, depending upon your IT department's policies.

Repair Windows Registry

How To Recover from a Corrupted Registry That Prevents Windows XP from Starting

This article describes how to recover a Windows XP system (without using the recovery console) that does not start because of corruption in the registry.

Step 1

When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWSYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWSYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
System error: Lsass.exe
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct.

Step 2

In this article, we will call the computer with the corrupted registry “Computer A” and we will call the other computer with a working Windows XP “Computer B”.

Step 3

Make sure both “Computer A” and “Computer B” are powered off. Unplug the power cord from both computers and take off the case from both computers. Before touching any components inside of the computer, touch the metal case to discharge any static electricity that may be built up in your body. The use of a wrist strap is recommended.

Step 4

Carefully remove the IDE ribbon cable and the power connector from the HDD (C: Drive) in “Computer A”. Remove any screws that are securing the HDD to the case, and remove the HDD from “Computer A”.

Step 5

Carefully plug an available IDE ribbon cable connector and power connector from “Computer B” into the HDD that you removed from “Computer A”. Take note of which position of the IDE cable you just connected to the HDD, and set the jumper on that HDD accordingly. (The connector on the end of the IDE ribbon cable is always the master and the one in the middle is always the slave.)

Step 6

Plug the power cord into “Computer B” and boot the system. Windows XP should find the HDD from “Computer A” and install the drivers for it. Then Windows XP should prompt you to reboot. When this happens, reboot the system.

Step 7

In order to gain access to the System Volume Information folder, use the one step in steps 8-12 that is the appropriate section for your computer.

Step 8

Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition Using the FAT32 File System

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
Click OK.
Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.

Step 9

Windows XP Professional Using the NTFS File System on a Domain

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
Click OK.
Right-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder, and then click Sharing and Security.
Click the Security tab.If the security tab does not show as stated in this article, you need to enable the security tab to be shown by doing the following (In a NTFS partition): Access Windows Explorer. (Start-All Programs-Accessories-Windows Explorer) Click “Tools”, click “Folder Options”, click the “View” tab, and clear the checkbox next to “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)”. Click “Apply” and then click “OK”.
Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Choose the account location if appropriate (either local or from the domain). Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on. Click OK, and then click OK again.
Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.

Step 10

Windows XP Professional using the NTFS File System on a Workgroup or Standalone Computer

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders.
Clear the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box. Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the change.
Clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
Click OK.
Right-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.If the security tab does not show as stated in that article, you need to enable the security tab to be shown by doing the following (In a NTFS partition): Access Windows Explorer. (Start-All Programs-Accessories-Windows Explorer) Click “Tools”, click “Folder Options”, click the “View” tab, and clear the checkbox next to “Use simple file sharing (Recommended)”. Click “Apply” and then click “OK”.
Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on. Click OK, and then click OK again.
Double-click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.

Step 11

Using CACLS with Windows XP Home Edition Using the NTFS File System

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
Make sure that you are in the root folder of the partition for which you want to gain access to the System Volume Information folder. For example, to gain access the C:\System Volume Information folder, make sure that you are in the root folder of drive C (at a "C:\" prompt).
Type the following line, and then press ENTER: cacls "driveletter.\System Volume Information" /E /G username:FMake sure to type the quotation marks as indicated. This command adds the specified user to the folder with Full Control permissions.
Click the System Volume Information folder in the root folder to open it.
If you need to remove the permissions after troubleshooting, type the following line at a command prompt, and then press ENTER: cacls "driveletter.\System Volume Information" /E /R usernameThis command removes all permissions for the specified user.

Step 12

The following steps also work if you restart the computer to Safe mode because simple file sharing is automatically turned off when you run the computer in Safe mode.

Open My Computer, right-click the System Volume Information folder, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab.
Click Add, and then type the name of the user to whom you want to give access to the folder. Typically, this is the account with which you are logged on.
Click OK, and then click OK again.
Double-click the System Volume Information folder to open it.

Step 13

In Windows Explorer, Navigate to “X: Drive:” (where the “X” indicates the HDD that was taken out of “Computer A”). Highlight “X: Drive”

Step 14

Click “File”, “New”, “Folder”. Name the new folder “TMP”. Note: In most cases, the “C: Drive” is where this computer will have the Windows XP operating system, it is important that you DO NOT do steps 6 on in the “C: Drive”, make sure you are doing them in the HDD that came from “Computer A” with the corrupt registry.

Step 15

In Windows Explorer, Navigate to the folder X:\WINDOWS\system32\config. Rename the following files as indicated.
rename DEFAULT to DEFAULT.bak
rename SAM to SAM.bak
rename SECURITY to SECURITY.bak
rename SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE.bak
rename SYSTEM to SYSTEM.bak

Step 16

Move those 5 files to the folder X:\TMP

Step 17

Navigate to the folder X:\System Volume Information
This folder should have one or more sub-folders named something like _restore{2DFE4378-585C-4511-9C11-E98B62D7827B}
In one or more of those sub-folders, there should be more sub-folders called RPxx. (the xx will be a number.) These are the locations that system restore creates and stores files for system restore points. In each of the RPxx folder, there should be a sub-folder called “snapshot”. The following path is an example of a folder path to the snapshot folder: X:\System Volume Information\_restore{2DFE4378-585C-4511-9C11-E98B62D7827B}\RP1\snapshot

Step 18

In the “snapshot” folders, the first five files should be called: _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM _REGISTRY_USER_DEFAULT
Navigate through these “snapshot” folders until you find the preceding five files dated a day or two before the registry got corrupted. (It helps to click “View” and “details” on these folders to see the date the files were modified.)

Step 19

Once you find those five files with the date you are comfortable with, copy those five files to X:\WINDOWS\system32\config. Rename the following files as indicated.
rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SAM to SAM
rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SECURITY to SECURITY
rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SOFTWARE to SOFTWARE
rename _REGISTRY_MACHINE_SYSTEM to SYSTEM
rename _REGISTRY_USER_DEFAULT to DEFAULT

Step 20

Power down “Computer B” now.

Step 21

Unplug the power cord from “Computer B”. Before touching any components inside of the computer, touch the metal case to discharge any static electricity that may be built up in your body. The use of a wrist strap is recommended.

Step 22

Carefully remove the IDE ribbon cable and the power connector from the HDD (X: Drive) in “Computer B”, and remove the HDD.

Step 23

Carefully plug the IDE ribbon cable connector and power connector from “Computer A” into the HDD. (Use the same connector location on the IDE ribbon cable that you originally removed from this drive.) Reset the jumper on that HDD according to the position indicated by the IDE connection location. (The connector on the end of the IDE ribbon cable is always the master and the one in the middle is always the slave.)

Step 24

Plug the power cord into “Computer A” and boot the system. Windows XP should boot up to the desktop now. (You may need to re-activate Windows XP at this point.

Step 25

Replace the case on both computers.

Tips

This procedure does not require the use of the Recovery Console, but it does require the use of a separate computer with a working copy of Microsoft Windows XP installed.
This article assumes that typical recovery methods have failed and access to the system is not available.
Although this procedure does not guarantee full recovery of the system to a previous state, there is a great chance that that will be the outcome. At the very least, you should be able to recover your data when you use this procedure. This procedure does not require the use of the Recovery Console, but it does require the use of a separate computer with a working copy of Microsoft Windows XP installed, separate from the one you are trying to recover. In Windows Vista, laptop owners can now choose and even make power plans to their preference. Depending on whether you have to make the most of the laptop or you want a short session to watch videos or photos, choosing a power plan for your laptop is a useful tool to know.

Default Power Plans

Decide what you are going to be using your laptop for. If you're always in reach of a plug-in unit for the AC cable, then maybe this isn't for you. But for notebook users with so much to do on a limited battery life, or gamers on an extended amount of time, power options are recommended.Â
Select Start>Control Panel.
Click Mobile PC, or Change battery settings, the sub-heading (skip to Step 5).
Select Power Options.
Review the range of available plans displayed in the window with their corresponding stats judged on Battery life and Performance.
Decide which option is best for you:
- For people on the go (i.e. frequent business trips), Power saver would be the best plan for you, as it saves energy by reducing your computer's performance where possible.
- For people who are not worried about setting a power plan, or who have convenient access to an AC cable in most situations (i.e. at home), choose a Balanced plan which balances performance with energy consumption on available hard ware.
- Or if you're going to be running applications which use high-end graphics or speed, choose the High performance power option which favors performance where necessary, but may use more energy.
Choose your preferred power plan by simply clicking on the bullet point corresponding to a plan.

Custom Power Plans

Start from Step 5 in the Default Power Plans section of this article. Select Create a power plan from the left pane of the window.Â
Choose out of Balanced, Power saver, or High performance which is closest to what you would like, and name the plan you are about to create (default is My Custom Plan 1). Now you can adjust the settings judged by On battery and Plugged in in order to suit your preferences:

There’s nothing wrong with this, but it’s easy to not pay close enough attention to what you’re doing. I’m very happy with this software, and I use it daily. It saves me huge amounts of time and makes my in-post pictures look great.

WordPress tags: To create WordPress tags, click on the little double arrows to expand the category/publish date bar at the bottom. In the expanded area, you’ll see a field for “keywords.” That’s where you can put tags for a WordPress blog (comma separated).

service mode. (Waiting for menu selection)

To create crossover cable, we must know first how we count the pin position in RJ45. In the image illustrated in the left side, we can see that we count the pin from the bottom side, start from pin number 1 in left side until pin number 8 in right side.

We must sure that all pin are complete (8 pin), if not complete we must change with another RJ45 that have complete PIN. In my experience, i usually found a RJ45 that not have complete PIN, so we can’t use this. So you must carefully.

Jakarta - Microsoft kini tengah bersiap-siap untuk menghadirkan wireless adapter terbaru untuk Xbox 360. Karena didedikasikan untuk konten High Definition (HD), perangkat ini memiliki kecepatan yang lebih baik dari pendahulunya.

Rencananya asesoris untuk Xbox 360 ini akan mulai beredar pada tanggal 20 November 2009, dimulai di Inggris lalu diteruskan kebeberapa negara lainnya.
